Access Services

Logo for Music, Mediation, and Disability Symposium

In line with the aims of the conference themes, the organizing committee is committed to fostering access via the online format of the conference. Presenters will be provided with a set of guidelines for presentation methods and best practices. Access needs will be surveyed as part of the conference registration procedure, and we invite conference participants to contact the organizing committee about access needs of which we should be aware.

CART Description

Communication access real-time translation (CART), also called open captioning or real-time captioning, is the general name of the system used to convert speech to text.

Captioning services for Music, Mediation, and Disability: Representation and Access are provided by Accurate Realtime Incorporated. Accurate Realtime Inc.’s CART captioners are highly skilled shorthand stenographers who write on advanced computerized steno machines at the speed of the spoken word.

Visual Language Interpretation

Visual language interpretation facilitates communication between parties who do not share the same language or mode of communication. Professional visual language interpreters are specifically trained in providing this service when Deaf, deafened or hard-of-hearing individuals are present.

ASL-English interpretation services for Music, Mediation, and Disability: Representation and Access are provided by the Sign Language Interpreting Associates Ottawa (SLIAO). SLIAO’s purpose is to ensure everyone can participate equally in the world we live in, empowering people to do this through interpreting services with the Deaf and hard of hearing community.
